Meet Sofia

Sofia is 17 years old and will graduate from high school in June 2023. She enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family and traveling. She plans to major in Marketing in college. She is a long time volunteer with iCan Bike coming in at 9 years of volunteering! Our camps can not happen without amazing volunteers and we extra appreciate people like Sofia that return summer after summer.

Sofia has been involved with iCan Bike since she was 6 years old as her mom ran the first iCan Bike program in New Jersey. Since she has been involved for so long she has done a little bit of everything such as administrative duties during the week, helping with check in, preparing for orientation to working directly with riders once she was old enough. Bike camp is a full family affair as her younger sister even attended camp and Sofia was able to work alongside her during the week. For the past couple of years, Sofia has been a camp co-director with her mom while still volunteering with riders during the week. She always looks forward to bike camp week to meet and get to know each rider. She says she is inspired by seeing the riders succeed each year.

When asked what the most meaningful part of volunteering is, Sofia said “The most meaningful part of working with the riders is getting to see their progress throughout the week and watch as they grow confident in their abilities to ride. Each Friday, I am filled with pride as I watch them ride around the track on their own and see how proud they are of themselves. It feels great to know that I was part of the process in helping them get there.”

Volunteering with iCan Bike led Sofia to become interested in participating in more volunteer work and service. She encourages anyone considering volunteering to go for it and would pass on to them that the program is extremely meaningful and even life changing. She says it is very rewarding and gives you the chance to change someone’s life.

Thank you Sofia for almost a decade of volunteering with our iCan Bike program! You have undoubtedly helped change many lives throughout your time volunteering and hope that you continue to be involved. You are one of the many vital volunteers that help our program and riders succeed!
