Meet Robert

We are excited to introduce you to Robert

Robert enjoys his job at McDonalds, watching movies, spending time on his tablet and riding with his dad on his motorcycle. Most excitingly for us, he now enjoys riding his bike! Robert is a great example that it’s never too late to accomplish a goal or master a new skill. At 30 years old, Robert attended an iCan Bike camp in Milford, PA this past June.

Prior to attending camp, Robert rode a bike with training wheels but had been unable to master the balance of riding a bike without the training wheels. He was nervous about falling but overcame his fears to give camp a shot! As the week progressed, Robert was no longer nervous and was having a great time. He began on our roller bikes and progressed through those stages quickly. By the middle of the third day of camp he was riding a two-wheel bike independently!

Robert was nominated to be a featured rider by the iCan Bike staff running his camp. Our staff and others were inspired by the pride they could see Robert had in himself after learning to ride independently. Our staff loved hearing about the bike trips Robert and his dad were already planning by the end of bike camp. Our Floor Supervisor Lyndsey said, “Being a part of his learning experience is something I will never forget. I hope that Robert gets to share many miles and amazing adventures with his dad!”

Since camp has ended, Robert’s confidence on his bike has continued to increase and he has been out on many bike rides just as he planned at bike camp. Robert has even graduated to riding on the road navigating traffic. His family let us know how happy they are that they can now all ride bikes together. We always love to hear about opportunities for our riders to be included and for more opportunities for active family outings. His dad also stated that he was “amazed at how everyone progressed so quickly in the program, physically and confidence wise.”

When we asked Robert if he had anything he wanted to share about his experience he said, “Amazing, and the people that taught me did an excellent job, and I’m actually happy that I can ride on 2 wheels.” Thank you to Robert for never giving up and overcoming his fears to attend camp. We hope the ability to ride a bike continues to open up more avenues of transportation, independence, inclusiveness and confidence for him!
