“Day one, Monday, July 26 – Our 11 (almost 12) year old son had never even so much as pedaled a tricycle. He had been using his bikes with pedals removed as balance bikes. He had not pedaled on a stationary bike when we tried that. He has Dyspraxia/Developmental Coordination Disorder and has neurological issues that takes him time to process movements. This also causes hypotonia and poor overall motor skills. It took two volunteers to help him steer and pedal at the same time.
Day three – Abby chooses Levi to be the first to evaluate on a two wheel bike. I had been filming each day to send to my husband, so I started filming. As Abby gets him started she let go and he just started riding! In the video I hear myself do this slight gasp and then I burst into tears of joy. Then I didn’t realize I said it out loud but I said “I’m crying!” This was only day three! He had a slight regression after he hit the back wheel of a bike that was parked and slightly sticking out onto the track on Day four. He didn’t fall but got flustered and embarrassed. Once again Abby got him right back out.
Day five – was amazing when all of the kids were out on the big track on two wheelers. Not all we’re riding independently, but most were. We all celebrated each other’s kids’ success and this gift of the iCan Bike program.
I have videos I have shared from the entire journey on Instagram and Facebook. I have gotten a huge response!
Levi rides his bike everyday and we will keep him practicing and getting better all the time. We cannot express just how grateful we are for this program. It has changed our son’s life for the better!”
